Stratix II Family of High-End FPGAs
The Stratix® II FPGA family, the second generation in Altera's high-end FPGA series, is the most recent family to have been fully characterized to military temperature grade. Although superseded by new generations in the Stratix series, devices in the 90-nm Stratix II family are still recommended for new designs in certain circumstances.
Applications requiring the extended military temperature range are the most obvious of these, but there are others. For example, Stratix II GX FPGAs still provide a robust solution for designs requiring immediate delivery of transceiver-based solutions up to 6.375 Gbps. However, devices in the Stratix III and Stratix IV FPGA families are the solution of choice in the majority of other high-end FPGA design circumstances.
Stratix II FPGAs
With Stratix II FPGAs, Altera introduced a totally new logic cell architecture, the adaptive logic module (ALM), and refined the on-chip TriMatrix memory and the digital signal processing (DSP) block for even higher performance. Stratix II FPGAs provide up to 180K equivalent logic elements (LEs), and up to 9.0 Mbits of on-chip RAM arranged in TriMatrix memory blocks, operating at up to 450 MHz, with DDR2 memory interfaces operating at up to 667 Mbps. In 90-nm Stratix II FPGAs, the number of DSP blocks expanded to 96 in the largest device, giving a maximum of 384 18 x 18 multipliers.
Stratix II GX FPGAs
Building on established high-performance architectural features, Stratix II GX FPGAs extended the capabilities of high-end FPGAs with on-chip transceivers. Using a transceiver block supporting four full-duplex channels and clock data recovery (CDR) technology allows transmission of data in excess of 6.375 Gbps per channel. This data rate supports many common high-speed communication protocols including SerialLite II, Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet/XAUI, SONET OC-12 and OC-48, Fibre Channel, the Serial RapidIO® standard, PCI Express Gen 2, and high definition (HD), standard definition (SD), and 3G SDI.
